Exhibition: STEVEN MARSHALL - STATIONARY WORLD
STEVEN MARSHALL - STATIONARY WORLD
06/12/07 - 21/12/07
The generic, wide open spaces and glassy, minimal interiors of these paintings are a perfect setting in which to observe and enjoy some Pedestriana. The world has been slowed to a standstill in order to enhance this activity, while, perhaps ironically, great efforts have then been made to recreate the sensations of moving through a peopled space and to restore the dynamics of this traffic. If some of the people in these pictures seem vaguely familiar it’s because they have been carefully designed to look vaguely familiar. They are figures painted to fit the description, ’normal-looking’. It may also be because many of them appear in more than one of my paintings, some have been strolling into frame for years. Yet they remain complete strangers, like the man who you’ve seen on the opposite platform every morning at the station, or the woman who is always to be seen with her trolley, walking towards town, when ever you drive to work.
